ANYTHING GOES REHEARSALS - January 2012

The students in the Phoenix Creative Arts Senior Youth Theatre are preparing to set sail with their production of Anything Goes at Leatherhead theatre next month. The production of Cole Porter’s popular classic features students aged 12-18 and features some great song and dance numbers that are bound to get your feet tapping with favourites like I get a kick out of you, It’s De-lovely, Friendship, You’re the top and of course, Anything Goes.

The students have worked very hard and their standard is very high. The musical is very demanding with only 17 members in the cast and they are singing in 4-part harmony a lot of the time. But it’s also great fun with lots of tap dancing and something for everyone.

More photos of the rehearsal can be found on our Facebook page.

Anything Goes is on Thursday to Saturday, 2-4th February at The Theatre, Leatherhead at 7.30pm. Tickets are £14.50 and £10 for under 16s and are available from the Leatherhead Theatre on 01372 365141 or from Phoenix on 0845 479 2190.

SWEENEY TODD COMPETITION RESULT - October 2011

We held a competition to win two tickets to see Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The winners of the competition were Sharon and Rebecca Herbert who attended the press night performance on Thursday 6th October. Rebecca, one or our current students at Horsham, was very excited to see ex-student Luke Brady performing as Anthony and singing 'Johanna' with Michael Ball in the musical.

Sharon Herbert said 'The show was excellent, everybody was fantastic, Luke was brilliant in his part of Anthony and Imelda Staunton was so funny it was unbelievable.' Rebecca thoroughly enjoyed attending the press night performance amongst such stars as award-winning comedy actress Miranda Hart.

The musical which stars Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton received 5 star reviews from The Guardian and The Daily Express and is on at the Chichester Festival Hall until 5 November.

UPDATE We had an office trip to see the show recently and were excited to see Luke in this fantastic show. He was playing the part of Anthony and we are all very excited as he has agreed to become a patron of Phoenix Creative Arts so hopefully there’ll be other opportunities to see Luke in school events in the future.

ARTS ALIVE LAUNCH DAY - October 2011

Phoenix helped kick off the Arts Alive Street Party this weekend in both Dorking and Leatherhead shopping centres. Shoppers at St Martin’s Walk in Dorking and the High Street in Leatherhead were treated to dance performances and encouraged to join in a tap master class which was for old and young alike.

The Senior Youth Theatre Group sang a number from their upcoming musical Anything Goes which will be performed at the Leatherhead Theatre from 2nd to 4th February 2012. Auditions will be held over the coming weeks for this production so if you think ‘you’re the top’ make sure you come along – it will be ‘de-lovely’!

DANCE CHALLENGE UPDATE - July 2011

Congratulations to Gail’s Tuesday street dance class who all travelled up to London on July 17th to compete in this national event. Although we didn’t win, we did sit right next to the group from Kettering that did win, and a great time was had by all. Students danced very well and gained lots of experience for next year. The annual event was attended by over 24, heat-winning groups from around the country and with all styles of dance being represented from tap and ballet to hip-hop.

The photo shows the girls performing the same dance a week earlier, in the End of Year Show 2011.
